Grand Valley State recorded a 5-4 win over Mercyhurst in a close match on Sunday at Ramblewood Tennis and Health Club in Grandville, Mich. GVSU won four out of six matches in singles play and one out of three in doubles action to seal the victory. Grand Valley improves to 13-4 overall and 3-1 in GLIAC play, while Mercyhurst drops to 11-5 overall and 3-2 in the conference.
Mercyhurst's Mariano Fava picked up a 6-4, 6-1 win over senior Adam Sandusky at #1 singles. At #2 singles, freshman Tony Dang knocked off Lee Marnik, 6-4, 6-2, while freshman Patrick Troy beat Mijo Cotic, 6-2, 6-2 in #3 singles play. Mateusz Przybysz defeated freshman Brock Plangger, 6-3, 7-5 at #4 singles. In #5 singles action, freshman Matt Globerson tallied a 6-2, 6-3 win over Ronald Heurich and sophomore Alex Switzer beat Kyle King, 6-4, 6-1 at #6 singles.
Marnik and Fava beat Sandusky and Dang, 8-3 at #1 doubles, while Heurich and Przybysz combined for a 9-8(5) win over Switzer and Globerson at #3 doubles. Senior Justin Sauerbrey and Troy recorded an 8-3 win over King and Cotic at #2 doubles.
Grand Valley State will host Aquinas College in a non-conference match on Monday, April 2 at 3:00 p.m. The Lakers will then travel to West Michigan rival Ferris State on Thursday, April 5 for a 2:00 p.m. match.
