LOCKPORT, Ill. - The Grand Valley State men's tennis team dropped a region match to No. 38 Lewis, 5-4, on Sunday night at the Challenge Fitness Center in Lockport, Ill.
GVSU falls to 8-5 on the season, while Lewis evens its record to 3-3. The Flyers are ranked No. 38 in the country and No. 4 in the midwest region. The Lakers hold a No. 7 ranking in the same region.
Lewis took an early lead in the match claiming victories in each slot in doubles competition. The Lakers were able to pull within one, 3-2, with two quick victories in singles. Freshman Michael Kaye picked up a 6-2, 6-1 win in the No. 6 spot, while Andrew Bole defeated his opponent, 6-2, 6-0, in the No. 4 position.
The Flyers jumped out in front with a three-set victory in the top position, but GVSU battled back to take the No. 3 and No. 5 wins. Junior Bryan Hodges took Florian Etienne to three sets, winning, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 at the third slot. Sophomore Quinn Sylow then picked up a 5-7, 6-3, 6-4, win in the No. 5 position.
With the match now tied, it came down to the No. 2 singles competition where Lewis came away with the victory. It was a hard-fought match as it consisted of three sets with each one heading into a tie breaker, but it was Erik Aunapuu who defeated Andrew Darrell, 7-6 (7), 6-7 (5), 7-6 (4).
The Lakers return to action on Saturday, March 23 against GLIAC foe Michigan Tech. The match is scheduled to be played in Allendale, but with snow on its way to West Michigan it is likely the match will be moved indoors. Stay tuned to GVSULakers.com for schedule updates.
