ORLANDO, Fla. - The Grand Valley State men's tennis team swept through its competition on Tuesday, picking up wins against Stonehill College and Moravian College on Tuesday.
Against Stonehill, GVSU stormed through doubles play coming away with wins. Francis Bertrand and Bryan Hodges, who are 10-2 on the season, picked up an 8-2 win in the top spot. Andrew Darrell and Quinn Sylow followed suit with an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles. Closing out doubles play, Andrew Bole and Ben Esh Nauta took their match, 8-5.
Bertrand won 6-1, 6-1 in singles play, while doubles partner Hodges had the same result at the No. 3 spot. Darrell competed in the No. 2 position and fought for a 6-2, 7-5 victory. In the No. 4 spot, Bole defeated Chris Martin, 6-1, 6-2. Sylow earned a 6-3, 6-4 victory at the No. 5 position before Michael Kaye closed up the shut out with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles.
In the second match against Moravian, Bertrand and Hodges defeated Matt Tuorto and John Wylie, 8-2, in the No. 1 doubles position. Darrell and Sylow picked up an 8-1 victory as did Andrew Heuerman and Kaye in the No. 3 spot.
Darrell took over the No. 1 position and earned a 6-2, 6-1 win. Sylow played No. 2 singles and walked away with a 6-0, 7-5 win against Wylie. Bole move to the No. 3 spot and defeated Libario Obeid, 6-1, 6-1. Esh-Nauta played No. 4 singles, taking away a 6-3, 7-5, win. Kaye shut out Brad Kutcha, 6-0, 6-0, in the fifth spot, while Heuerman allowed C.J. Widdifield just one set, picking up a 6-1, 6-0, win in the No. 6 spot.
Grand Valley State is now 8-1 on the year and take Wednesday off before taking on Coe College at 8 a.m. on Thursday. The Lakers will face region opponent Bellarmine in the afternoon match at 1 p.m.
