GRANDVILLE, Mich. - The Grand Valley State men's tennis team opened conference play with an 8-1 win against visiting Tiffin on Thursday night at Ramblewood Tennis Club.

Grand Valley State jumped out in front with three doubles wins to take the lead and never look back. The duo of sophomore Francis Bertrand and junior Bryan Hodges picked up an 8-6 win in the No. 1 spot. Junior Andrew Darrell paired with newcomer Quinn Sylow for an 8-4 victory at No. 2 doubles. Freshman Andrew Bole and junior Ben Esh-Nauta finished the GVSU sweep with a hard-fought, 9-7, victory in the final slot.

The Lakers continued with strong play in singles action with Bertrand and Hodges each picking up wins in their singles matches at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, respectively. Bertrand had little trouble with Max Waeters as he won, 6-1, 6-2. Hoges defeated Kyle Johnson, 6-3, 6-4.

In the No. 2 spot, Darrell picked up a 6-2, 6-3 win against Tiffin's Luiz Carvalho. Bole won his No. 5 match, 6-4, 6-2, while freshman Michael Kaye defeated Brian Coffman, 6-4, 7-5.

The Lakers continue GLIAC play against Ohio Dominican at 12:30 p.m. on Friday at Ramblewood.
