ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Grand Valley State men's tennis team had successful matches against Grand Rapids foe, Davenport and Cornerstone, on Saturday night. GVSU defeated DU, 7-2 in the afternoon before winning 8-1 against Cornerstone.

The two wins move GVSU to 2-1 for the early part of the season as the Lakers prepare for the Grand Rapids City Tournament beginning on Friday, Feb. 15.

In the afternoon match against Davenport, GVSU got behind 2-1 after doubles play with Francis Bertrand and Bryan Hodges picking up the lone win with an 8-5 victory in the No. 1 spot.

The Lakers then swept through singles play to take the match.  Andrew Darrell took his match to three sets, defeating Pierre Michelsen, 6-3, 6-7 (5), 10-5 in the No. 1 spot. Bertrand then picked up a 7-6 (5), 6-2 victory in the second slot. Double partner Hodges also won in three sets, 2-6, 6-4, 6-0. 

Newcomer Quinn Sylow dropped Tyler Chambers in three set, 2-6, 6-4, 6-0, while Andrew Bole defeated Matheus Carvalho 7-6 (2), 6-2. Michael Kaye wrapped up the singles win in the No. 6 spot with a 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (3) victory.

Later in the night, GVSU hosted Cornerstone, dropping the crosstown rivals, 8-1.  The Lakers swept doubles play.  Bertrand and Hodges picked up another win defeating their counterparts, 8-1.  Darrell and Sylow won 8-2 over John Andrew and Chris Reed. In the No. 3 spot, Andrew Heuerman and Bole picked up an 8-4 win.



Bertrand took over the No. 1 slot against Cornerstone with a 6-2, 6-0 win against Elijah Yi. Darrell won, 6-2, 7-6 (1), in the No. 2 spot.  Hodges defeated Reed, 6-0, 6-2, while Sylow also won in two sets, 6-2, 6-1, in the No. 4 spot.  Rounding out the Lakers wins was a 6-2, 1-6, 10-4 victory in the No. 6 spot from Zac Felice.

GVSU takes a break from dual matches next weekend in the Grand Rapids City Tournament where the Lakers will play a tournament against some of the area universities.
