Grand Valley State's men's and women's swimming and diving teams ended the semester with a solid performance as they defeated Hope College on Friday. The Laker men won by a score of 140-97, while the women won 139-92. The teams will compete at the University of Indianapolis on Jan. 6 at 1:00 p.m.
GVSU's men recorded two NCAA automation qualifying times. Evan Kobes, Justin Barkel, Justin Vasquez, and Dan Kimble swam a GVSU varsity record and a qualifying time of 1:33.01. Kobes also recorded a qualifying time and a varsity record in the 100 yard backstroke as he swam a time of 49.60. He then set a "B" time of 21.02 in the 50 yard freestyle.
Vasquez won the 200 yard freestyle in a time of 1:44.36 and Kyle Barrons swam the 100 yard butterfly in a time of 52.98 for a first place finish. Joel Overway tallied 255.45 point in the 3-meter dive, while Chris Conner swam a 59.48 to win the 100 yard breaststroke.
On the women's side, Jenna Thayer recorded a GVSU varsity and freshman record and a "B" cut time to win the 100 yard butterfly (58.40). She also won the 200 yard IM in a time of 2:10.19. Mackenzie Mikulenas also posted a "B" qualifying time of 24.81 in the 50 yard freestyle, while Danielle Buglio tallied a GVSU varsity and freshman record and a "B" cut time of 59.46 in the 100 yard backstroke.
Buglio, Thayer, EB Phillips, and Mikulenas won the 200 yard medley relay (1:50.69), Megan Hahler finished the 1000 yard freestyle in a time of 10:57.48 for a first place finish, and Bridget Higgs won the 100 yard breaststroke (1:11.94).
Raelyn Prelewitz won both the 1-meter (234.50) and 3-meter dive (230.45).
The Lakers set five varsity and two freshman records, marking 17 varsity and eight freshman records set in the last two meets. GVSU also tallied 32 lifetime best swims and 42 season best swims in the meet. The Lakers have posted 84 lifetime best swims and 119 season best swims in the last two meets.
