Lakers earn 21 first place finishes to defeat Albion

The Grand Valley men's and women's swimming and diving teams claimed a 54-132 victory against Albion College. The Lakers recorded a strong performance from both the men's and women's teams and will travel to Wheaton College Nov. 4, to compete against Wheaton College and Calvin College.

The women's teams aided the Lakers to a strong victory with 11 first place finishes. Danielle Buglio, Alison VanKampen, Jenna Thayer and Melissa Fletti began the meet finishing first for the Lakers in the 200-yard medley relay (1:53.6). Nina Reynolds, and Cynthia Brown finished second and third respectively for the Lakers in the 1000-yard freestyle behind Rachel Doherty from Albion. Jenna Thayer won the women's 200-yard freestyle clocking a 2:00.74, followed by Megan Hahler (2:02.44). Amy Williams won the 50-yard freestyle (25.77) for the Lakers, tailed by Melissa Faletti, finishing second (25.97) and Alison Scholtz, finishing third (26.13).

The women swept the 400-yard IM as Alison VanKampen (4:47.86), Katie Lawrie (4:48.01) and Kelli Anguilm (5:05.38) took first, second and third, respectively. Raelyn Prelewitz earned a first place finished in the 1M diving with a score of 249.25, followed by Lindsay Brown from Albion who tallied 231.15 to finish second, while Jennifer Hillson finished third for Grand Valley (211.50). EB Phillips finished first in the 100-yard butterfly with a finals time of 1:02.18, with Danielle Buglio and Beth Cyr following with times of 1:02.85 and 1:04.14.

Grand Valley earned first and second place finishes in the 100-yard freestyle as Jenna Thayer clocked a 54.03 to earn a first place finish, while Melissa Faletti to claim second for the Lakers. Dana Brigham from Albion finished third with a 57.56. Eli Frans clocked a victorious 1:04.51 for the Lakers in the 100-yard backstroke. She was followed by teammates Allison Scholz, finishing second and Erika Schwarzkopf, finishing third.

In the 500-yard freestyle, Eli Leskovar finished behind Rachel Doherty, while Liz Rodgers followed to finish third. Jennifer Hillson finished third for the Lakers in the 3M Diving tailing a 235.2 behind Emily Magyar and Lindsay Brown from Albion.Katie Lawrie and Shannon Morton earned first and second place finishes for the Lakers in the 100-yard breaststroke in front of Megan Dolan from Albion.

The Grand Valley Men added 10 first place finishes for the Lakers. The men's 200-yard medley team made of Ryan Whitsitt, Justin Barkel, Justin Vasquez and Dan Kimle raced to a first place finish with a time of 1:39.09. Matt Wikowski and Kyle Brugher finished second and third behind Paul Krone in the 1000-yard freestyle, while Justin Vasquez clocked a 1:46.90 to race to a first place finish in the 200-yard freestyle. Kyle Barrons and Ryan Kraai trailed Vasquez to second and third place finishes.

Ben Jylkka clocked a finals time of 22.68 in the 50-yard freestyle to finish second behind Chase Bacon From Albion, while Aaron Renton from GVSU finished third. Ross Perry, Hans Hill and Mitch Knoll swept the 400-yard IM with first, second and third place finishes. Joel Overyway tallied 270.25 in the 3M Diving to earn a first place finish, with Ryan Smith following with a score of 262.12, as Ty Lattimore from Albion finished third.

The Lakers also swept the 100-yard butterfly, as Phil Watkins raced to a first place finish with a time of 54.38, followed by Tony Stumpo and Ben Jylkka who were awarded second and third place finishes. In the 100-yard freestyle, Justin Barkel swam a 48.57 to win the event, while Matt Witkowski trailed with a time of 48.67. Ryan Whitsitt claimed first in the 100-yard backstroke after finishing in 56.91, while Paul Tansey finished second and Rob Parker finished third. Ross Perry and Chris Winkel finished behind Paul Krone from Albion in the 500-yard freestyle to place second and third, respectively.

Joel Overway was awarded first after recording 269.85 in the 1M diving; he was followed by Ty Lattimore from Albion and Evan Betts from GVSU. The Grand Valley Men took first, second and third place in the 100-yard breaststroke as Chris Conner raced to a first place finish time of 59.63, while Hans Hill and Jimmy Donahue followed. The GVSU 200-yard relay team of Ryan Whitsitt, Tony Stump, Dan Kimble and Justin Vasquez also finished first for the Lakers with a time of 1:29.99.
