Grand Valley State's men's and women's swimming and diving teams had a strong performance at the Wheaton Invitational last weekend. The Laker men tallied a fifth place finish with 385 points, while the women captured 357 points for a sixth place finish.
Sophomore Evan Kobes recorded an NCAA automatic qualifying time to lead off the 400 medley relay. He also set an NCAA "B" qualifying and a GVSU varsity record in the 200 yard backstroke in a time of 1:52.74.
There were also 11 NCAA "B" qualifying times recorded and 12 GVSU varsity records set in the meet. Freshman Jenna Thayer posted a qualifying time, while setting both the GVSU freshman and varsity record in the 200 yard IM with a time of 2:10.18, the 200 yard butterfly in 2:11.74, and in the 400 yard IM in a time of 4:40.82.
Freshman Justin Barkel set the GVSU freshman and varsity record in the 200 yard IM in a time of 1:57.67. He also recorded an NCAA "B" qualifying time and both the GVSU freshman and varsity records in the 100 yard breaststroke as he swam a 57.34 and set an NCAA "B" qualifying, GVSU freshman and varsity record in the 200 yard breaststroke (2:07.21).
Senior Mackenzie Mikulenas recorded an NCAA "B" qualifying time in the 50 yard freestyle, while junior Justin Vasquez tallied a qualifying time of 1:55.82 in the 200 yard butterfly.
The men's 200 medley relay team of Kobes, Barkel, Vasquez, and junior Dan Kimble set a GVSU varsity record and Kobes, Barkel, Vasquez, and senior Dan Felix set a varsity record of 3:25.46 in the 400 medley relay. The men's 800 yard freestyle relay team of Kimble, Barkel, Felix, and freshmam Kyle Burgher swam a time of 7:06.52 to set a GVSU varsity record.
In the meet, there were 52 individual lifetime best swims and 77 individual season's best swims recorded.
GVSU's divers competed in the Calvin Diving Invitational and sophomore Joel Overway won both the 1 and 3 meter dive, while junior Raelyn Prelewitz won the 1 meter and placed second in the 3 meter. Junior Jennifer Hillson placed third on the 1 meter and fourth on the 3 meter.
