Grand Rapids, Mich. - The Grand Valley State Men's swimming & diving team is in first place after the second day of competition at the 2011 Calvin College Winter Invitational with 651.5 points. Indianapolis is second with 392.5 points, followed by Kalamazoo College (328) and Calvin (216). The third and final day of competition will take place Saturday (Dec. 3) at Calvin College.
The Lakers turned in an incredible day in the water, setting 10 Calvin College pool records, six Grand Valley State varsity records and two varsity freshman record. In addition, the Laker hit four NCAA Division II "A" marks and 16 "B" standards. Senior Aaron Beebe hit the "A" mark in the 400 IM (3:54.09), breaking the GVSU varsity record by almost eight seconds and the Calvin College pool mark by six seconds. Beebe also set a pool mark and hit the "A" standard in the 200 butterfly (1:45.97) and was on the 400 medley relay team that hit the "A" mark and set a pool record. Aaron Marken set a GVSU varsity record, a pool record and hit the NCAA "B" mark in the prelims of the 100 breast (55.94). GVSU's 200 free relay team (Medo, Marecki, Santos, Griffith) set the GVSU varsity mark and a pool mark in the 200 free relay, while the 400 medley relay team (Santos, Marken, Beebe, Medo) hit the "A" mark and set a pool record (3:17.64). Milan Medo won the 50 free (20.38/FR/PR/B) and 100 breast (55.84/SR/FR/PR/B), while also swimming on the 200 free and 400 medley relay teams.
