Canton, Ohio - The Grand Valley State men's swimming and diving team made school history Saturday (Mar. 13) night at the NCAA DII Swimming & Diving Championships in Canton, Ohio. GVSU reached the trophy stand for the first time with its fourth-place finish (314 points) and tallied the best-ever finish at the NCAA Championships. The Lakers' previous best-ever finish was ninth in 2009. Drury claimed the team title with 538 points, followed by Incarnate Word (403), Wayne State (343) and GVSU (314).
Sophomore Raphael Santos (Sao Paulo, Brazil) recorded a fifth-place finish in the 200 back when he touched the wall in 1:48.92. Jordan Schrotenboer (Holland, Mich.) finished 14th in a time 1:50.43. Senior Hans Hill (Columbus, Ohio/St. Charles Prep) set a school-record when he finished 11th in the 200 breast with a time of 2:03.98. Evan Betts (Milan, Mich.) recorded a seventh-place finish on the 3-meter board with a championship total of 404.60. Reece Bierhalter (South Haven, Mich.) finished 10th with a score of 394.30 points, while Patrick VanDommelen (Dorr, Mich./Wayland) tallied a 12th-place finish (388.80). GVSU closed the night with a ninth-place finish in the 400 free relay. Justin Pattermann (Elburn, Ill./East Kaneland), Matt Witkowski (South Lyon, Mich.), Joe Sayre (Dexter, Mich.) and Aaron Beebe (Grand Haven, Mich.) touched the wall in 3:02.86 and sealed the fourth-place trophy for the team.
Ten Grand Valley State student-athletes earned a total of 39 all-america awards. Beebe, Pattermann, Santos and Witkowski eached earned six all-america honors. In addition, Hill, Jordan Schrotenboer, Betts, Bierhalter, VanDommelen and Sayre earned all-america awards for the Lakers.
