Detroit, Mich. - The Grand Valley State men's swimming & diving team made a strong push on day two at the 2010 GLIAC Swimming & Diving Championships in Detroit, Michigan. The Lakers scored 271 points and forged into a lead of 98 points (340-242) over defending GLIAC Champion Wayne State. Ashland is in third with 240 points, followed by Indianapolis (214) and Lewis (188). Friday's prelims will begin at 10:30 a.m., with the Friday finals set for 6:00 p.m.
Senior Evan Betts claimed his first-ever GLIAC title with an incredible finals score of 524.60 on the 1-meter diving board. Betts shattered his own previous school-record total that stood at 505.85. Patrick VanDommelen finished third with a score of 437.75, followed by Reece Bierhalter in fourth (436.40), Will Hill in sixth (397.20) and Kyle Gebraad in eighth (374.30). GVSU scored 76 points on the 1-meter board.
The Lakers scored 59 points in the 500 freestyle with four reaching the evening finals. David Hayhow touched third in a time of 3:36.64, while Jeff Pauza touched fourth (4:37.02) as both improved their NCAA qualifying marks. Joe Sayre hit the NCAA "B" mark (4:39.28) in the morning prelims and then finished seventh in the finals (4:42.15). Aaron Beebe, who already hit his "B" mark in the 500 free, finished eighth with a time of 4:42.29. Derek Mead, who finished 12th in a time of 4:41.77, hit the NCAA "B" qualifying mark in the morning prelims with a time of 4:41.35.
Pattermann touched second in the 200 IM with a time of 1:53.69, while Jon Bardsley finished eighth (1:56.22), Kurt VonEhr 10th (1:56.74) and Jimmy Donahue 12th (1:57.76). Both Bardsley and VonEhr improved their "B" marks with a times of 1:56.08 and 1:56.47, respectively, in the morning prelims. Matt Witkowski finished sixth in the 50 free (21.59) and Lantson Gordon touched 10th (21.88).

The Lakers' 400 medley relay team of Raphael Santos, Hans Hill, Justin Pattermann and Matt Witkowski finished second in a time of 3:22.30, while the 200 free relay team of Jordan Schrotenboer, Matt Witkowski, Raphael Santos and Justin Pattermann finished fourth in a time of 1:24.90.
