Laker Men Claim A 171-27 Win Over Findlay

The Grand Valley State men's swimming & diving team claimed a 171-27 victory over Findlay Saturday (Jan. 16) afternoon in GLIAC action. The Lakers dominated the Oilers, winning all 13 events and claiming a 1-2-3 finish in 10 of 13 events. GVSU will conclude regular season action this coming Friday (Hope) and Saturday (Indianapolis). Following regular season action, the Lakers will next compete at the GLIAC Championships (Feb. 10-13).

GVSU started strong with a record-setting performance in the 400 medley relay. Raphael Santos, Hans Hill, Justin Pattermann and Matt Witkowski touched in 3:25.10, break the previous pool record of 3:27.09 held by Oakland University. Keeping with the records theme, Santos set the pool record in the 100 backstroke with his lead leg of the 400 medley relay. Santos touched in 50.57, smashing the previous mark of 52.34.

Patrick VanDommelen had a big day for the Lakers, hitting an NCAA qualifying mark in the 1-meter dive with a score of 301.90. VanDommelen finished second behind teammate Evan Betts, who tallied a score of 311.93. Aaron Beebe won the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:36.91, and Kurt VonEhr took first in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:47.22. Lantson Gordon won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.23, and Jordan Schrotenboer took first in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:59.01. In the 200-yard butterfly, Witkowski got his second victory of the day, with a time of 2:00.16, and Aaron Renton took first in the 100-yard freestyle in 48.31.

 

 

In the 200-yard backstroke, Jeff Pauza finished first with a time of 1:57.93, and David Hayhow won the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:49.69. Betts got his second first-place finish of the day in the 3-meter diving competition with a score of 293.78, and Patterman got his second win of the day in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:09.15. The men finished up the day with a victory in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:15.14, consisting of Pauza, Santos, Gordon, and Schrotenboer.
