GVSU Men Finish Fourth At NCAA Championships With 314 Points

The Grand Valley State men's swimming and diving team made school history Saturday (Mar. 13) night at the NCAA DII Swimming & Diving Championships in Canton, Ohio. GVSU reached the trophy stand for the first time with its fourth-place finish (314 points) and tallied the best-ever finish at the NCAA Championships. The Lakers' previous best-ever finish was ninth in 2009. Drury claimed the team title with 538 points, followed by Incarnate Word (403), Wayne State (343) and GVSU (314).

Laker Men Make Move Into Third Place At NCAA S&D Championships

The Grand Valley State men's swimming and diving team made a big move Thursday night at the 2010 NCAA DII Swimming & Diving National Championships in Canton, Ohio. GVSU entered Thursday's finals session in seventh place with 46 points, but six top 10 finishes, including two second-place finishes moved GVSU into third place with 162 points. GVSU's 116-point session was a single-session, school-record and the second-place finishes were the best-ever for both a relay and an individual event. Drury leads the way with 264 points and Incarnate Word is second with 199 points. Competition will continue Friday (Mar. 12) morning with prelims.

Lakers Seventh After Day 1 At NCAA S&D Championships

The Grand Valley State men's and women's swimming & diving teams are set for competition at the 2010 NCAA DII Swimming & Diving National Championships March 10-13 in Canton, Ohio. The Laker men claimed the 2010 GLIAC Championship, while the Laker women placed second. Both teams finished ninth at the 2009 NCAA Championships, marking the best-ever finish for both programs at the NCAA Championships.

Sophomore Raphael Santos captured his second GLIAC title and set a WSU pool record with his first-place finish in the 100 backstroke in an NCAA DII "A" qualifying time of 1:49.37. The Lakers' Jordan Schrotenboer also hit the "A" mark with his second-place finish (1:50.96), while Jon Bardsley hit the "B" standard when he finished ninth (1:54.62).

The Lakers scored 271 points and forged into a lead of 98 points (340-242) over defending GLIAC Champion Wayne State. Ashland is in third with 240 points, followed by Indianapolis (214) and Lewis (188). Friday's prelims will begin at 10:30 a.m., with the Friday finals set for 6:00 p.m.

Schrotenboer Named GLIAC Swimmer of the Week

Grand Valley State junior Jordan Schrotenboer was named the GLIAC Men's Swimmer of the week for the week of Dec. 9. Schrotenboer recorded four NCAA "A" qualifying times at the Calvin College Invite on Friday-Saturday (Dec. 4-5), in which the Lakers scored 1,392.5 points, easily outdistancing Kalamazoo (948.5), Calvin (379), and Alma (255).
