GVSU Men Earn Top Seed At NCAA Great Lakes Super Regional

Allendale, Mich. - The Grand Valley State men's golf team has been selected as one of 80 teams to participate in the 2005 NCAA DII Men's Golf Championships Super Regionals it was announced by the NCAA. The Lakers will compete May 2-4 at St. Joseph Country Club in St. Joseph, Missouri as the top seed in the Great Lakes Region and one of eight teams at the Super Regional. The top team from the 54-hole Great Lakes Region Super Regional will advance to the finals May 17-20 at The Club at Savannah Harbor in Savannah, Georgia.

The Lakers enter the Great Lakes Super Regional as one of the hottest teams in the region. Grand Valley State has three tournament wins, a second and two fourth place finishes in spring action. GVSU finished third at the GLIAC Championships during the fall portion of its schedule. A young, but talented squad will be making its sixth straight appearance in the NCAA Championships. A pair of sophomores and three freshman lead the way for the Lakers. Kyle Murphy (Grand Rapids, Mich./East Kentwood) and Steve Larson (Manistique, Mich.) are in their second year, while Josh Orler (Mason, Mich.), Mark Pawlowski (Mason, Mich.) and Tony Mango (Milford, Mich.) are competing in the NCAA Championships for the first time.

"I really like the way we are playing at this point of the season," said head coach Don Underwood. "We have improved in every tournament we have played in during the spring season and this group is really starting to feel confident in their games," added Underwood.
