2012 GLIAC Championship Round One Results

ELYRIA, Ohio - The Grand Valley State men's golf team is sitting in seventh after the first day of the 2012 GLIAC Championship with a team-score of 311 (+23).

Junior Joel Siegel (Sparta, Mich.) turned in an impressive opening round for the Lakers, carding a 73 (+1) that included four birdies. Siegel finds himself in a tie for third place.

Sophomore Jack Rider (Kalamazoo, Mich./Hackett) turned in a first-round 76 (+4) that included one birdie and is in a tie for 15th.

A pair of freshman were the third and fourth-best scorers for the Lakers, as Tyler Polulak (DeWitt, Mich.) had a first-round 80 (+8) and Chris Beltzer (Haslett, Mich.) recorded an 82 (+10) to round out the scoring for GVSU on day one.

The most surprising result of the day came from the undisputed leader of the Lakers during the fall season, as junior Chris Cunningham (Milford, Mich.) found himself with the worst score of the day for GVSU. Cunningham turned in an 84 (+12) in the first round despite stellar play for most of the round. Cunningham was sitting at one-over in his round through 12 holes, but then struggled to a 10-stroke 13th hole, a par three, that doomed the remainder of his round.

The leader of the individual results after round one is Malone's Jon Clark, who carded a staggering 68 (-4) in the first round of play. Walsh's Chuck Demchak is second at 72 (E), followed by a host of players with 73, including Siegel.

Tiffin and Ashland lead the team results after the first round with team scores of 303 (+15), followed by Ferris State (307, +19), Wayne State (308, +20) and Saginaw Valley State (309, +21) to round out the top five. Ohio Dominican sits in sixth (310, +22) with GVSU just behind in seventh (311, +23). Findlay and Lake Erie (313, +25) share the eighth spot, followed by Northwood (314, +26), Northern Michigan (319, +31) and Lake Superior State (322, +34) after a closely-contested first round of play.

The second of three rounds will begin on Monday (Oct. 15) at 11 a.m. at the Elyria Country Club. The first GVSU player will begin play at 11:48 a.m.
