Grosse Ile, Mich. - Grand Valley State finished in fourth place at the Motor City Invitational on Monday afternoon (Oct. 12) at Grosse Ile Golf and Country Club in Grosse Ile, Mich. The Lakers had three players place in the top-20 and tallied a team score of 898 (+46) in the two-day, 54-hole tournament.
GVSU followed an opening round 306 on Sunday afternoon with a 294 in the second round that was not completed until Monday due to darkness. A third round score of 298 capped off the Lakers' total, placing them behind Ferris State, which won the tournament with an 880 (+28). Wayne State finished second with a score of 884 (+32), while Ashland notched an 888 (+36) and placed third.
Leading the Lakers was sophomore Mike Basinski, who totaled a tie for sixth place. Basinski followed an opening-day 76 with a 70 in the second round and a 75 on Monday for a score of 221 (+8). He was tied with Eric Lilleboe of Ferris State, who consistently has been one of the top golfers in the region during his collegiate career.
Senior Matt Malloure placed in a tie for 12th with a final score of 223 (+10). Malloure got progressively better as the tournament went along, following an opening round 77 with a 74 and a 72 on Monday. Sophomore Ben Brooks also recorded a top-20 performance with a score of 226 (+13), tying him for 20th place. Brooks sandwiched a pair of 76's around a 74 in the second round for his final score.
Freshman Chase Olsen and sophomore Travis Shooks tied for 31st place with a 229 (+16). Olsen shot 78-76-75 to total his score, while Shooks was consistent with a 77 on the opening day and consecutive 76's in the final two rounds.
