Grosse Ile, Mich. - The Grand Valley State men's golf team sits in fifth place after the opening day of the Motor City Invitational, held in Grosse Ile, Mich. GVSU totaled a first round score of 306 (+22) on Sunday (Oct. 11) and weather issues caused for the second round to not be fully completed. Teams will finish the 54-hole tournament on Monday (Oct. 12).
Frost on the course on Sunday morning caused for a late start to the tournament, as all 10 teams were to play two rounds on Sunday. Most schools did not complete 36 holes because of darkness, but play will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Monday and the teams should finish all three rounds that day.
The Lakers' score of 306 puts them nine strokes behind Ashland, which shot a first-round 297 (+13) and leads the field. Ferris State and Wayne State are tied for second place with a 299 (+15), while Findlay is fourth at 301 (+17).
All five GVSU golfers were separated by two strokes. Sophomores Mike Basinski and Ben Brooks both shot opening rounds of 76 (+5) and are tied for 22nd place. Basinski went 39-37, while Brooks notched consecutive 38's for his score.
Senior Matt Malloure and sophomore Travis Shooks each shot 77 (+6) and are tied for 28th. Malloure followed a front-nine score of 41 with a 36 on the back nine, while Shooks opened with a 43 and shot a 34 on the final nine holes. Freshman Chase Olsen is tied for 30th place with a 78 (+7), as he shot 40-38 on Sunday.
