Marquette, Mich. - The Grand Valley State men's golf team captured the GLIAC Championship on Monday (Oct. 5) in Marquette, Mich. for its second straight conference title. GVSU had three of the top six golfers and posted an overall team score of 881 (+29) at Greywalls Course at Marquette Golf Club. It is the fourth GLIAC Championship in school history for the men's golf program and third in the past four years.

After leading the tournament after the first two rounds with scores of 297 and 295 on Saturday and Sunday, the Lakers fired a 289 on Monday to cruise to the title. GVSU was the only team to score under 300 in all three rounds. Grand Valley State's score of 881 (+29) was 20 strokes better than Findlay, which finished second with a 901 (+49). Wayne State finished third with a 902 (+50), while Ferris State and Saginaw Valley State followed in a fourth-place tie with a score of 908 (+56).

The Lakers received a stellar team effort, including three of the top six performances of the tournament. Senior Matt Malloure and sophomore Mike Basinski tied for second place with Wayne State's Eric Johnson. All three players shot 216 (+3) and finished behind Eric Lilleboe of Ferris State, who carded a 209 (-4) and was the tournament medalist.

Malloure stayed right around par in all three rounds, shooting 70-74-72, while Basinski sandwiched a 68 on Sunday between rounds of 77 (Saturday) and 71 (Monday) for his total. Also resting easily in the top-10 was freshman Chase Olsen, who placed sixth with a 219 (+6). Olsen shot a 72 on Saturday and 77 on Sunday, but capped off the tournament with a 1-under 70 on Monday afternoon.

Sophomore Ben Brooks followed an opening-round 78 with a pair of 76's on the final two days for a 230 (+17), finishing in a tie for 15th place. Senior Anthony Provenzola scored better each day, as she shot 81-78-77 for a total of 236 (+23), putting him in 29th place.

In last year's conference championship at Bay City Country Club in Bay City, Mich., the Lakers recorded a team score of 863, which was then a school record and is also the GLIAC Tournament 54-hole record. In addition to 2008 and 2009, Grand Valley State also captured the team trophy in 1999 and 2006. GVSU's team score of 881 is tied for the sixth-best in school history, tying the score when it won the 2006 GLIAC title.
