Marquette, Mich. - After the opening day of the GLIAC Championship at Greywalls Course in Marquette, Mich., Grand Valley State sits in first place with a team score of 297. The top five schools are separated by five total strokes, while GVSU had two golfers place in the top five. It is a three-day tournament, with play on Sunday (Oct. 4) beginning at 10:30 a.m.
Grand Valley State's team score of 297 (+13) was one stroke better than Findlay, who notched a 298 (+14). Following the Oilers were Saginaw Valley State at 299 (+15), Wayne State at 301 (+17), and Ferris State rounding out the top five schools with a 302 (+18).
Senior Matt Malloure fired a 70 on the opening day, putting him one shot under par. He is tied for first place with Eric Lilleboe from Ferris State. Freshman Chase Olsen is two strokes back after notching a 72 (+1), placing him in a tie for third.
Sophomore Mike Basinski totaled a 77 (+6) and is tied for 19th place, while sophomore Ben Brooks shot a 78 (+7), tying him for 27th place. Senior Anthony Provenzola is tied for 38th place after shooting an 81 (+10).
The tournament will conclude on Monday (Oct. 5).
