KANSASVILLE, Wis. - The Grand Valley State men's golf team had a strong showing at the Great Lakes Fall Regional recently, finishing third with a two-round team total of 592 (+16).
The two-day tournament, taking place on two separate courses, got off to a great start for the Lakers, who shot a team total of 290 (+2) on the White Birch course at Brighton Dale Links. The score was good enough for second after day one, just three strokes behind Wayne State's 287 (-1) that was shot on the Blue Spruce course.
Junior Chris Cunningham (Milford, Mich.) shot a first-round 69 (-3) on Sunday (Sept. 30), the second-best round of the day and tournament. On the Blue Spruce course on Monday (Oct. 1), Cunningham carded a 75 (+3) to finish at 144 (E) for the tournament and in a tie for third place on the individual leaderboard.
Sophomore Jack Rider (Kalamazoo, Mich./Hackett) used a first-round 71 (-1) and a second-round 75 (+3) to finish at 146 (+2) for the tournament and in a tie for sixth on the leaderboard.
Junior Joel Siegel (Sparta, Mich.) carded a 73 (+1) on the White Birch course on Sunday, then followed it up with a 74 (+2) on the Blue Spruce course to finish with a 147 (+3) total, good enough for a tie for 11th place.
Freshman Sean Carlino (Hamilton, Ont./Hill Park Secondary) used rounds of 77 (+5) and 78 (+6) to card a 155 (+11) two-day total, while fellow freshman Tyler Polulak (DeWitt, Mich.) shot 83 (+11) and 79 (+7) to finish at 162 (+18).
As a team, the Lakers shot 302 (+14) on the second day on the Blue Spruce course, dropping GVSU in to third place with a two-day total of 592 (+16).
Wayne State won the event with a 576 (E), followed by Tiffin just ahead of the Lakers with a 590 (+14) total. Wisconsin-Parkside (593, +17) and Maryville (596, +20) rounded out the top five.
The Lakers will take next weekend off before heading to the 2012 GLIAC Championship, October 13th-15th at Elyria Country Club in Elyria, Ohio.
