SOUTH HAVEN, Mich. - The Grand Valley State men's golf team had the low team round of the day at Hawkshead G.C. in the final round of the GLIAC Fall Event, using a 297 to surge to a third-place finish behind two eagles by the Lakers' top golfer.
Junior Chris Cunningham (Milford, Mich.) eagled both the 5th and 17th hole par 5's on Monday (Sept. 24) en route to his second 74 (+2) of the tournament to finish at 148 (+4) and in a tie for seventh on the individual leaderboard.
The low round of the day for the Lakers was shot by sophomore Jack Rider (Kalamazoo, Mich./Hackett), who carded an even-par 72 in the final round. His 149 (+5) total put him in a tie for 11th in the individual standings.
Freshman Sean Carlino (Hamilton, Ont./Hill Park Secondary) had a 79 (+7) on Monday to finish at 153 (+9) for the tournament and in a tie for 29th.
Junior Joel Siegel (Sparta, Mich.) had a solid showing in his final round of play, shooting a 74 (+2) in the second round, a six-stroke improvement over his first round score. His 154 (+10) total placed him in a tie for 32nd.
Freshman Chris Beltzer (Haslett, Mich.) kept consistent, shooting a final round 77 (+5) to finish at 155 (+11) for the tournament and in a tie for 36th.
Freshman Tyler Polulak (DeWitt, Mich.), who shot an opening round 74 playing as an individual on Sunday, withdrew from the competition on Monday.
The Lakers' 297 team total was the low round of the day and vaulted the team from ninth to third, just one stroke behind runner-up Saginaw Valley. GVSU finished with a 600 (+24), just behind Saginaw Valley's 599 (+23). Wayne State won the tournament, using rounds of 292 and 302 to finish at 594 (+18).
Ferris State and Malone both finish with 604 (+28) team totals to round out the top five.
The Lakers will travel to Kansasville, Wis. this upcoming weekend to take part in the Great Lakes Region Fall Invitational at Strawberry Creek G.C. on Sunday (Sept. 30) and Monday (Oct. 1).
