MARQUETTE, Mich. - The Grand Valley State men's golf team got the 2012-13 season started over the weekend, taking part in the Northern Michigan Intercollegiate Match Play tournament at the Marquette Golf Club. The Lakers had a strong first-day showing and finished the event with the third-best winning percentage.
On day one, GVSU actually led the way with a 16-5 team record, including perfect 3-0 records from sophomore Jack Rider (Kalamazoo, Mich./Hackett), freshman Sean Carlino (Hamilton, Ont./Hill Park Secondary) and junior Ian Ellis (Northville, Mich./Oakland C.C.).
All three of those golfers made it to the "final eight" of Sunday's competition.
Junior Joel Siegel (Sparta, Mich.), junior Chris Cunningham (Milford, Mich.) and freshman Chris Beltzer (Haslett, Mich.) all went 2-1 on the first day of competition, while freshman Tyler Polulak (DeWitt, Mich.) went 1-2.
On day two of competition, Cunningham led the way with a perfect 3-0 day to finish with a 5-1 overall record in the tournament. Carlino and Ellis went 4-2 for the tournament, while Siegel, Rider and Beltzer each finished 3-3.
Overall, GVSU finished with a 24-18 record, a 57-percent winning percentage, third-best only behind Saginaw Valley State (20-10; 67-percent) and Wayne State (27-15; 64-percent).
Wisconsin-Parkside's Brian Krupo won the final individual match, capping a 6-0 weekend. Placing as the runner-up was Wayne State's Reid Dean with a final record of 5-1.
The men's golf team will compete in its first team tournament next Monday (Sept. 17) and Tuesday (Sept. 18) when they travel to Indianapolis, Ind. to compete in the University of Indianapolis Invitational at Brickyard Crossings G.C.
