Grand Valley State is in second place after the first round of the NCAA Division II Men's Central/Great Lakes Super Regional. GVSU shot a 291 in the first round and is trailing Ferris State by just one stroke. Play will resume today and conclude on Wednesday.
Junior Josh Orler is tied for third place after firing a two under par score of 70 in the first round. Orler posted four birdies on the day. Senior Kyle Murphy posted a one over par, 73, which ties him for 10th place. Sophomore Matt Johnson and freshman Matt Malloure are both tied for 17th place as they each recorded a score of 74. Senior Steve Larson shot a 77, which ties him for 33rd place.
The top team from each region within the super regional and the top individual not with a team from each super regional (regardless of region) will advance to the finals May 22-25 at The Meadows in Allendale, Michigan. The finals will be hosted by Grand Valley State University. Ten additional teams will earn berths to the finals. These teams will be determined based on the previous three-year average of top-10 finishes of a super regional at the finals. For the 2007 championships, the additional super regional allotments are as follows: Atlantic/Southeast -- Three South/South Central -- Four West/Northwest -- Three.
Grand Valley State is making its sixth straight NCAA DII Great Lakes Super Regional appearance. The Lakers claimed the Great Lakes Super Regional title in 2002, advancing to the National Championships. GVSU finished third a year ago, with Steve Larson earning an invitation as an individual.
