Day One Results

Duncan, Okla. - After day one of the 2010 Midwest/South Central Men's Regional Tournament on Monday (May 3), Grand Valley State is in eighth place out of 20 teams and sits just one stroke out of fifth place with a score of 297. The Lakers had two golfers finish in the top-25 in Monday's opening round, being played at The Territory Golf and Country Club in Duncan, Okla.

GVSU's opening round 297 was good for +9, as the Lakers are just one shot behind Indianapolis, Northern Kentucky, and Dallas Baptist. That trio of teams is tied for fifth place with a 296 (+8). Wayne State was dominant on day one with a 278 (-10), while Central Missouri (285, -3), Ferris State (287, -1), and Abilene Christian (292, +4) sit in second, third, and fourth place, respectively. Grand Valley State's first day performance is important, as the top five teams will advance to the Division II Men's Golf Championship in Noblesville, Ind. on May 18-21.

Leading the way for the Lakers is sophomore Nick Gunthorpe, who had a terrific opening day. Gunthorpe shot a first round 70, which was good for two under par. He is tied for sixth place with six other golfers. The other GVSU golfer in the top-25 is Travis Shooks. The sophomore shot an even par 72, putting him in a five-way tie for 23rd place after Monday's round.

Senior Matt Malloure is tied for 57th place with a first day 76 (+4), as the third Laker on the scoreboard. Sophomore Mike Basinski shot an 79 (+7), tying for 81st place with 11 other golfers, while freshman Chase Olsen is tied for 96th with a score of 81 (+9).

All 20 teams will play 18 more holes of golf on both Tuesday and Wednesday to complete the tournament.
