NOBLESVILLE, Ind. - The Grand Valley State men's golf team was able to shoot a final round 295 on Monday (Apr. 15) to grab a top five finish at the Midwest Regional #3 Tournament at Purgatory G.C., led by sophomore Jack Rider's second round 69.
The Lakers used a second round 295 with their first round 296 to finish at 591 for the tournament.
On day two of competition for the Lakers, it was Rider (Kalamazoo, Mich./Hackett) who led the way with a 69 in the final round of competition, tied for the second-lowest individual round of the day. It was an eight-stroke improvement over his first round score and gave him a two-round total of 146 (+2) to finish in a tie for 17th on the individual leaderboard.
Overall, leading the Lakers was junior Chris Cunningham (Milford, Mich.), who had a final round 74 to finish at 144 (E) for the tournament and in a tie for eighth, just two strokes behind the medalist.
Freshman Chris Beltzer (Haslett, Mich.) turned in a second round 77 to go with his first round 72 to finish at 149 (+5) for the tournament and in a tie for 42nd.
Junior Joel Siegel (Sparta, Mich.) improved his first round score by two strokes with a final round 75 to turn in a two round total of 152 (+8).
Freshman Nick Williams (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington) finished at 158 (+14) for the tournament after a final round 80 on Monday.
Missouri-St. Louis won the tournament with a two round total of 579. Maryville (585), Lewis (587), Tiffin (590) and GVSU (591) rounded out the top five.
The Lakers will be back on the course this weekend for the GLIAC Spring Invite, taking place at Winding Hollow G.C. in New Albany, Ohio on Saturday (Apr. 20) and Sunday (Apr. 21).
