Allendale, Mich. - Grand Valley State shot an opening round 297 to take a first round lead and held on for a two stroke victory at the Gannon Invitational over the weekend. The Lakers posted a two-day total of 608, which edged out Northwood and Wayne State who tied for second. It is the fourth victory of the 2002-03 season for the Lakers, who head into the final stretch of the season ranked #1 in the NCAA Great Lakes Region. Kevin Kremer and Casey Smits led GVSU with scores of 151, which tied for fourth individually.

Kremer shot a 68, the low round of the tournament, on day one and led GVSU to a three stroke advantage over WSU heading into the final round. Smits led GVSU in day two with a 75 while Jacob Hamilton shot 76 on both days to finish at 152, and tied for ninth.

Bill Schmidt and Erik Wilutis also contributed for GVSU, as they shot 157 and 158, respectively.

The Lakers will play their third regional qualifier this Sunday and Monday, April 20-21, in Auburn, Ind. GVSU will follow that tournament with the NCAA Super Regional on May 5-7 with the winner advancing to the NCAA Championships.
