NOBLESVILLE, Ind. - The Grand Valley State men's golf team is only six strokes out of first after the opening round of play at Midwest Regional #3, held at Purgatory G.C. on Sunday (Apr. 14).
Missouri-St. Louis and Wayne State (Mich.) are tied atop the leaderboard after a first-round 290. Maryville (291), Tiffin (293), and the trio of Northwood, Ferris State and Lewis (294) round out the top five. GVSU and Quincy are tied for eighth at 296, while host Indianapolis is in 10th at 297.
Junior Chris Cunningham (Milford, Mich.) turned in a two-under 70 in the first round of play and is in a tie for fourth on the individual leaderboard, only two strokes behind the leader. The 70 included a very impressive 33 on the opening nine.
Freshman Chris Beltzer (Haslett, Mich.) had an impressive showing, carding an even-par 72 and is in a tie for 10th.
Also golfing with the top five was freshman Nick Williams (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington), who shot a 78.
The Lakers will hope to turn in another stellar day on Monday (Apr. 15) in the final day of competition.
