GEORGETOWN, Ky. - The Grand Valley State men's golf team, after shooting a first-round 298 on Saturday at Cherry Blossom G.C., struggled to a team round of 313 in the final round of competition at The Jewell to finish at 611 overall and in 12th place.
Junior Chris Cunningham (Milford, Mich.), who shot a one-under 71 on Saturday, shot a 77 on Sunday (Apr. 7) to finish at 148 (+4) for the tournament and in a tie for 13th.
The low round of the day went to sophomore Jack Rider (Kalamazoo, Mich./Hackett), who improved on a first-round 78 to shoot a 76 on day two and finish at 154 (+10) for the tournament, in a tie for 52nd.
Junior Joel Siegel (Sparta, Mich.), who also struggled on day one with an 80, improved for a 77 on day two to card a two-round total of 157 (+13).
After shooting stellar first-round scores, freshmen Chris Beltzer (Haslett, Mich.) and Nick Williams (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington) shot 85 and 83, respectively, to finish at 158 (+14) and 159 (+15) for the tournament.
Missouri-St. Louis won the tournament with a two-round 572, easily outdistancing the rest of the field. Tying for second were Ferris State and Bellarmine at 595. Indianapolis (596), Tiffin (597), Wayne State (Mich.) (598), Ohio Dominican (600), Wisconsin-Parkside (601), Ashland (605) and the tie of Lewis and Southern Indiana (610) rounded out the top 10.
The Lakers will now prepare for Midwest Regional #3 at Purgatory G.C. in Noblesville, Ind. on April 14th and 15th.
