2013 Cardinal Spring Invite Results

FLORENCE, Ky. - The Grand Valley State men's golf team finished third at the Cardinal Spring Invitational this past weekend, played at Boone Links Golf Course.

Freshman Chris Beltzer (Haslett, Mich.) turned in the best performance of his young career, leading the Lakers with a third-place finish. Beltzer turned in a first round 74, then carded a nine-hole 37 to finish at 111 (+3) for the tournament.

Junior Joel Siegel (Sparta, Mich.) picked up where he left off in the fall, finishing in a tie for fourth for the Lakers in the 27-hole tournament. After shooting a five-over 77 on the first day of competition, Siegel followed that up with a 36 in nine holes on the second day to finish at 113 (+5) for the tournament.

Junior Chris Cunningham (Milford, Mich.) struggled with an 81 on the opening 18, but rebounded for a 36 on the second day tofinish at 117 (+9) and in a tie for 16th.

Sophomore Jack Rider (Kalamazoo, Mich./Hackett) was just behind, carding rounds of 80 and 38 to finish at 118 (+10) and in a tie for 19th.

Sophomore Derek Barribeau (Brighton, Mich.) saw his first action as a GVSU golfer, tallying rounds of 84 and 41 to finish at 125 (+17) and in 34th place.

The final Laker to compete was junior Ian Ellis (Northville, Mich./Oakland C.C.), who finished in 37th with a total of 140.


 

 

The Lakers were third after the opening round with a team score of 312, then had the second best round of day two with a 147 in nine holes to finish at 459 (+27) for the tournament.

Saginaw Valley State (448, +16) won the tournament, followed by Wayne State (449, +17), GVSU, Lake Superior State (468, +36) and Findlay (472, +40). Wayne State's Tyler Laserra won the individual medal with scores of 70 and 37 for a one-under total.

GVSU will now continue with the second weekend of a six-weekend stretch of tournaments. The Lakers will head to Columbus, Ind. to take part in the Parkside Spring Invitational on March 31st and April 1st.
