Allendale, Mich. - Grand Valley State University head football coach Brian Kelly announced Wednesday evening that he has withdrawn his candidacy for the University of Montana coaching position and would remain head football coach in charge of the Laker football program. In addition, Kelly stated that he and Grand Valley State have agreed in principle to the contract offer that was extended by GVSU Athletic Director Tim Selgo.
"I would like to thank the University of Montana and Athletic Director Wayne Hogan for their interest in me as a candidate for the head football coaching vacancy at Montana," said Kelly. "I was impressed with what the University of Montana coaching position offered, however, I have a great situation as the head football coach at Grand Valley State and would like to remain in the West Michigan area," added the all-time winningest coach in GVSU football history. "We have built a football program at Grand Valley State that is strong from top to bottom and I am excited about the 2003 season."
Kelly, who owns a 104-34-2 coaching mark at Grand Valley State, led the Lakers to the 2002 NCAA Division II Football National Championship last Saturday with a 31-24 victory over Valdosta State. Kelly's .750 winning percentage is the fourth-highest active winning percentage in Division II football.
