Alledale, Mich. - The Game: #1Ranked Grand Valley State will host #17 East Stroudsburg in an NCAA DII National Semifinal contest Saturday at 1 p.m. GVSU is coming off a 24-17 victory over #4 Saginaw Valley State, while East Stroudsburg claimed a 55-28 victory over C.W. Post.

The Series: This will be the first-ever meeting between Grand Valley State and East Stroudsburg. GVSU is 2-3 versus the PSAC all-time in NCAA playoff action and 4-3 all-time versus teams that currently comprise the Northeast Region. GVSU has won its last two playoff meetings versus the PSAC (2001: GVSU 42, Bloomsburg 14; 2002: GVSU 62, Indiana (Pa.) 21).

GVSU Playoff History: Grand Valley State is making its 10th NCAA Division II playoff appearance. GVSU is 15-2 in its last 17 playoff games since the 2001 season. Grand Valley State has won each of its last eight home playoff games. The Lakers are 15-7 all-time in the DII Playoffs and 1-1 in the NAIA playoffs. GVSU has held six of its last eight playoff opponents to 13 points or less, including five that have scored seven points or less.

Grand Valley State has an all-time overall mark of 261-114-3 (.694) in 35 years of playing football. GVSU has the second best winning percentage of football playing schools in the State of Michigan, behind Michigan's 849-279-36 (.746) mark...GVSU is 68-5 since the sixth game of the 2000 season with back-to-back National Championships (2002-2003). The Lakers are 49-3 in GLIAC action since sixth game of the 2000 season and its senior class enters the East Stroudsburg game with a 49-4 overall mark.

• Grand Valley State finished the regular season ranked #1 in the AFCA coaches poll for the final eight straight weeks. Including this season, GVSU has been ranked number one for a total of 39 polls, the second-highest total in DII history behind North Dakota State's 41. GVSU has been ranked in the top 10 59 times since the 2001 season. In addition, the Lakers have been ranked in the top five 56 weeks and number one 39 weeks...Grand Valley State opened the 2005 season ranked third in the AFCA Division II Coaches Poll...The Lakers opened the three previous years as the number one ranked team in the AFCA preseason poll. GVSU was ranked number one in the country by Sports Illustrated, marking the fourth straight year the Lakers have opened the year ranked number one in a preseason poll.
 

 

• Grand Valley State concluded the 2004 season ranked 9th in the final AFCA coaches poll in 2004, marking the fourth straight year GVSU finished the year ranked in the top 10 (2001-2, 2002-1, 2003-1, 2004-9). The Lakers are 33-2 when being ranked number one since 8/30/02, GVSU is 62-5 when ranked in the AFCA top 25 since 2001. GVSU has been ranked in the AFCA top 25 in 73 straight polls.

• Home Sweet Home -- Grand Valley State is 36-3 at Lubbers Stadium since the 2000 season, including an 8-0 mark in the NCAA DII Playoffs.

• Grand Valley State claimed its fourth undefeated regular season in school history in 2005. The Lakers recorded undefeated regular seasons in 1989 (11-0), 2001 (10-0) and 2002 (10-0).

• Grand Valley State set a GLIAC record versus Northern Michigan for second half time of possession (26:23) and fourth quarter (14:00). Northern Michigan ran six offensive plays in the third quarter and just three plays in the fourth quarter.

• 1,000 Yard Rushers -- Grand Valley State has three 1,000-yard career rushers in its backfield. Cullen Finnerty, Ryan Hukill and Astin Martin have each broke the 1,000-yard career mark, while Brandon Langston is just 67 yards shy (933). Finnerty enters the East Stroudsburg game with 1,713 rushing yards and is 16th on the all-time list. Senior Ryan Hukill is 18th in the Laker record books with 1,467 career rushing yards. First-year Laker Astin Martin, who has toted the ball for 1,147 yards and four TDs in 11 games, rushed for 1,221 yards at Toledo in his two years as a Rocket for a collegiate total of 2,368.

• Getting Defensive -- The Grand Valley State defense has yielded 10 TDs in 11 games this season, with three of those 10 TDs coming in the fourth quarter (UI, HC, SVSU) when the outcome of the game had already been decided. The Lakers held three opponents out of the endzone for over 11 quarters to start the season and have yielded just two TDs since early in the third quarter of the Northwood game Oct. 22 (13 Quarters).

• Third Down "INEFFICIENCY" -- The Grand Valley State defense is holding opponents to just 30 percent on third down conversions this season (51-for-168). In addition, GVSU's opponents are converting just 52.5 percent of its passes for a pass efficiency rating of 85.08 and just three passing Ts.

• Total Defense - Grand Valley State has yielded 1,049 rushing yards and 1,709 passing yards in 11 games this season. The Lakers rank 10th in the country in total defense, yielding just 250.7 yards per game.

• Rushing Defense - GVSU is yielding 95.4 rushing yards per game this season. GVSU's opponents have rushed for 1,049 yards and seven rushing TDs in 11 games. Grand Valley State has held 25-of-its-last-39 opponents under 100 yards rushing. Laker opponents are averaging 85.5 yards rushing per game during that stretch and have rushed for just 26 TDs.

• Passing Defense - The Grand Valley State pass defense has yielded just 1,709 yards (155.4 ypg) and three passing TDs this season. Laker opponents are completing just 52.5 percent of their passes for an average 4.4 yards per pass and 8.3 yards per completion. The Lakers' 85.08 pass efficiency defense ranks first in the country.

• The Laker defense has recorded 29 QB sacks this season, while the GVSU offensive line has yielded just 12 QB sacks in 11 games. DT Mike McFadden leads the way with 15 (-83), followed by Quartez Vickerson (4), Justin Ulberg (4), Rory Steinbach (4) and Dan Skuta.

• GVSU has 81 total tackles for loss this season (-308) by 18 different players. DT Mike McFadden leads the way with 16 TFL, while freshman LB Dan Skuta has 10.0. LB Anthony Adams (8.5) and LB Rory Steinbach (6.0) rank third and fourth, respectively.

• Balanced Attack -- GVSU finished the regular season ranking as one of five teams in DII averaging over 225 yards rushing and passing...Grand Valley State rushed the ball 502 times for 2,450 (2205.7 ypg) yards and completed 157 passes for 2,450 yards (222.7 ypg) during the regular season.

The previous mark for total attendance was 52,225 set by GVSU in 2003. The Lakers also eclipsed the GLIAC single-game record versus Ferris State (14,557) in Lubbers Stadium and nearly set another record with 14,442 vs. Saginaw Valley State.
