No. 1 Grand Valley State will host No. 13 Saginaw Valley State Saturday (Sept. 12) at 7 p.m. in Lubbers Stadium. This is the home opener for the Lakers. Grand Valley State enters the game 2-0 overall and 1-0 in GLIAC action, while the Cardinals come in with an identical mark. Tickets are available by calling 331-3200.
Grand Valley State leads the all-time series with Saginaw Valley State by a 27-10 margin. The Lakers have won five straight games versus the Cardinals and hold a 16-2 advantage at Lubbers Stadium. This will be the 11th straight meeting between the Lakers and Cardinals when one team has been ranked either #1 or #2 in the country. The Lakers have been the team ranked #1 or #2 in 10 of those meetings. The lone time SVSU has been ranked higher than GVSU was in the 2003 playoffs and GVSU went on to claim a 10-3 win at Saginaw Valley State and eventually went on to win the National Chamionship. GVSU tallied the first shutout in series history a year in the Lakers' 36-0 win.
If you can't make it to the game be sure to catch all of the action via TV, the internet or on the radio. Comcast (900/901) will televise the game with Tom Cleary and Bob Mitchell calling the action. In addition, Cleary and Mitchell will call the game via the internet at www.gvsulakers.com. Dick Nelson and Steve Lloyd-Jones will call the action on the radio dial at 106.9 FM (WMUS).
