Allendale, Mich. - Grand Valley State University released its 2009 schedule, complete with game times today. The Lakers will play a full GLIAC slate of 10 games and picked up an 11th game with a home-and-home series versus West Texas A&M beginning with the 2009 season opener.
Grand Valley State will begin the 2009 season by playing four-of-its-first-five games on the road. The Lakers will open with a non-league game at perennial DII power West Texas A&M in Canyon, Texas on Saturday, Aug. 29th at 7 p.m. (ET). GVSU will stay on the road for the GLIAC opener at Indianapolis on Sept. 5th at 6 p.m. Grand Valley State will play its home opener on Sept. 12th versus GLIAC rival Saginaw Valley State, before heading back onto the road for a pair of games at Ferris State (Sept. 19th) and Michigan Tech (Sept. 26th). The Ferris State game will kickoff at 7 p.m., while the MTU contest will kickoff at 6 p.m.
"We certainly have a challenging schedule, but when you throw in the fact that we are on the road four times in the first five weeks it really becomes difficult," said fifth-year head coach Chuck Martin. "However, we are excited to get a quality non-conference opponent in West Texas A&M and we always know that we are the target for every GLIAC team," added Martin.
The Lakers will return home for an Oct. 3rd Family Day contest versus Tiffin (7 p.m.), then head back on the road for 2:30 p.m. game at Hillsdale College on Oct. 10th. Three of the final four games are at the friendly confines of Lubbers Stadium, beginning with the annual Homecoming game versus Findlay Oct. 17th at 7 p.m. The Lakers will be at Ashland on Oct. 24th for a 1 p.m. contest, before returning home for the final two regular season games. The Lakers will host Northern Michigan Oct. 31st at 7 p.m. and Wayne State Nov. 7th at 1 p.m.
