Feb. 7, 2007

Allendale, Mich. - Grand Valley State University head football coach Chuck Martin announced the signing of 24 student-athletes to attend and play football for the Lakers in the fall of 2007.

The class of 2007 features signees from five states, including 17 from Michigan, three from Illinois, two from Ohio, and one each from Indiana and California.

"I thought our coaching staff did an outstanding job of identifying the talent that best fit our needs in Michigan," said third-year head coach Chuck Martin. "Our number one goal is to always recruit Michigan first and we felt like we were able to get what we wanted from our home territory," added Martin.

The Laker signees include 14 on the offensive side of the ball and eight on the defensive side.

"I am so impressed with the quality of the student-athlete we are able to recruit to Grand Valley State," added Martin. "Our name recognition enables us to get in on some players that are being recruited at the Division I level," added Martin.

GVSU returns 49 letterwinners in 2007, including eight starters on offense and nine on defense, from a squad that finished 15-0 and claimed its fourth NCAA DII Football National Championship in the last five years. GVSU is 79-5 the last six years with four NCAA DII National Championships (2002, 2003, 2005, 2006) and five title game appearances (2001, 2002, 2003, 2005 and 2006). GVSU is 85-5 in its last 90 games dating back to the sixth game of the 2000 season.
