Allendale, Mich. - Grand Valley State University head football coach Matt Mitchell announced the signing of 32 student-athletes to attend and play football for the Lakers in the fall of 2010.

"I thought our coaching staff did an outstanding job of first identifying talent and then second recruiting those kids to be a part of Grand Valley State University and our football program," said first-year head coach Matt Mitchell. "We always want to recruit the state of Michigan first and I am extremely pleased with the quality of student-athlete we were able to recruit to Grand Valley State."

Grand Valley State's 2010 class consists of 32 players from the state of Michigan and from Illinois.

"Our name recognition and the success of football program enables our coaching staff to get in on some players that are being recruited at the Division I level," Mitchell added. "It is important for us to continue to battle those Division I schools for those players if we want build on our past success."

GVSU returns 43 letterwinners in 2010, including nine players that have started games on offense and nine that have started on the defensive side of the ball. GVSU is 115-8 the last nine years with four NCAA DII National Championships (2002, 2003, 2005, 2006) and six title game appearances (2001, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2009). Grand Valley State will open the 2010 campaign Thursday, Sept. 2 at 7:00 p.m. versus West Texas A&M.
