Allendale, Mich. - Grand Valley State wrapped up its spring practices with the annual spring football game on Saturday afternoon (April 11), as the offense defeated the defense 54-41. They used a modified scoring system which allowed for points to be awarded for plays such as defensive turnovers, forcing punts, sacks, and the offense gaining first downs.
The lone touchdown of the game was on a 19-yard pass from Marquel Neasman to Israel Woolfork, who finished the game with two catches for 37 yards. Neasman went 13-for-23 for 154 yards and the lone touchdown on the day.
Brandon Miller, the only other quarterback to take snaps in the game, went 9-for-16 for 163 yards.
The biggest play of the game came on a 58-yard pass from Miller to Johnny Benjamin down the left sideline to put the game away for the offense.
On defense, the two stars of the day were Myron Puryear who collected five tackles and picked off two passes (both in the endzone) and Luther Ware, who also notched five tackles and one interception. Scott Kimball was the player of the game on the defensive line, tallying two tackles, one sack, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery. In the backfield, Chris Crawford had a game-high seven tackles and one pass break-up.
The Lakers open the season on August 29 when they travel to West Texas A&M for a game slated to begin at 7:00 p.m. EST.
