Steve Brockelbank enters his third year as the offensive line coach at Grand Valley State. Brockelbank's unit enabled the Laker offense to feature one of the most balanced attacks in the country in 2005.
The Laker offensive line featured five All-GLIAC performers and two All-Americans that paved the way for the GVSU offense to average more than 220 yards passing and 210 yards rushing per game. Josh Bourke, Brandon Barnes, Mike Pinter, Chris Stoddard and Joe Wohlscheid earned All-GLIAC plaudits, with Bourke and Wohlscheid garnering national attention. Further evidence of balance saw the Lakers rush for 25 TDs and pass for 27. In addition, Grand Valley State averaged 4.7 yards per rushing attempt and 6.2 yards per play in 2005. The Laker offensive front proved to be equally versatile in run and pass blocking. GVSU allowed just 12 QB sacks in 313 passing attempts and were tackled for a loss just 73 times in 590 rushing attempts.
Brockelbank's offensive charges faced several injuries in his first season at the helm of the offensive line in 2004. Several first-year performers on the Laker offensive line yielded just 22 QB sacks in 364 passing attempts and keyed an offense that ranked among the top five in several categories. Senior James Streit and freshman Brandon Barnes earned All-GLIAC honors under Brockelbank.
Prior to his arrival at Grand Valley State, Steve spent the five years as head football coach at Ludington High School. Brockelbank was the offensive line coach at Hillsdale College from 1994-99. In addition to coaching the offensive line, Brockelbank was the offensive coordinator for the Chargers from 1997-99. While at Hillsdale, Brockelbank guided an offense that ranked among the best in the MIFC in terms of total offense. Steve also spent two years (1992-93) as the offensive line coach at Wayne State.
Brockelbank, who earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Eastern Michigan University in 1991, was a three-year letterwinner and a two-time All-Mid American Conference performer for the Eagles on the gridiron. Steve completed his Master's in Education at Spring Arbor University in 1997.
A native of Jenison, Brockelbank earned all-state honors for the Wildcats in 1985. Steve and his wife, Heidi, have three daughters, Hayley (11), Madisyn (9), and Morgan (4).
