Allendale, Mich. - The Grand Valley State men's basketball team tips off the 2012-13 season on Monday night (Nov. 12) against visiting Michigan-Dearborn at 6:00 p.m. in GVSU Fieldhouse Arena. In the season opener last year, the Lakers topped UMD by a 94-51 score.

In 2011-12, Grand Valley State went 14-13 overall and finished fourth in the GLIAC North Division with a 10-9 overall record. GVSU returns three starters and six letterwinners from last season's team, led by three seniors who will be in the regular rotation.

Senior point guard Breland Hogan is the team's leading returning scorer at 9.9 points per game. Hogan, a Preseason All-GLIAC Second Team selection, dished out 89 assists and recorded 39 steals, both of which were team-highs last season.

Guard Tony Peters also returns after scoring 6.0 points per game last year and knocking down 36.9 percent of his three-point attempts. Forward Tyrone Lee, a member of the 2011-12 GLIAC All-Defensive Team, totaled 23 blocks and 18 steals last season.

The Lakers played their only exhibition game of this season on Oct. 29, falling at Cincinnati, 80-60. GVSU had kept the game close at 71-60 with 3:11 left before the Bearcats scored the game's final nine points. Transfer Kristers Zeidaks led the Lakers with 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting, while Lee also added 10 points.

Michigan-Dearborn, an NAIA school from the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC), is 2-1 to start the season. The Wolves defeated Grace Bible and Taylor, both by two points each, while suffering a loss to Rochester in between the two victories.

GVSU is 6-0 all-time against Michigan-Dearborn, having scored at least 100 points in three of the six meetings. Laker head coach Ric Wesley is 8-0 all-time in season openers and home openers at Grand Valley State.
