Nate Babcock Added to Laker Basketball Coaching Staff

May 16, 2012

Allendale, Mich. - Grand Valley State head men's basketball coach Ric Wesley has announced the hiring of Nate Babcock as an assistant coach to the Laker program. Babcock, most recently a special assistant coach at Michigan State, begins his duties at GVSU immediately.

"We are very excited to add Nate to our staff," said Wesley, who will be entering his eighth season as head coach of the Lakers. "He has been around basketball his whole life and has great insight into the game. His time at Michigan State working with Tom Izzo and his staff has prepared him well to take this step. Nate's MSU contacts, as well as his NBA ties, will give him a head start in recruiting. He's got a bright future in coaching and we are happy he decided to join our GVSU staff."

Babcock, a Minnesota native, earned his undergraduate degree in psychology from Wisconsin-Eau Claire and received a Master's degree in kinesiology from Michigan State. While at MSU, he was a graduate assistant for two years and a special assistant during his third season with the Spartans. During his time at Michigan State, the Spartans won a pair of Big Ten titles and went to the NCAA Final Four in 2010. Babcock specialized in player development, as well as video and scouting work.

Prior to working with the Spartans, Babcock was an assistant coach at Eleva-Strum High School. The team made three state tournament appearances and won the 2008 Wisconsin state championship.

Babcock comes from quite a basketball family. His dad, Rob Babcock, has worked with the Minnesota Timberwolves for 18 years, where he is currently the Director of Scouting and Operations. He was the General Manager of the Toronto Raptors for two years and also worked with the Denver Nuggets. Both of his uncles also work in the NBA, as Pete Babcock had over 20 years of experience as a General Manager with the Denver Nuggets and Atlanta Hawks. He is now a scout for the Cleveland Cavaliers. Babcock's uncle, Dave, is the Director of Player Personnel for the Milwaukee Bucks. His brother Chris is on the Texas Longhorns coaching staff.
