Allendale, Mich. - Grand Valley State head men's basketball coach Ric Wesley announced that former Lake Superior State guard Joel Whymer will attend and play basketball at Grand Valley State beginning with the 2005-06 season. Whymer will have to sit out the 2005-06 basketball season in terms of playing in games per the GLIAC transfer rules, however, he will be allowed to practice with the team. Whymer will have two years of basketball eligibility remaining on the basketball court when he is eligible for the 2006-07 campaign.
Whymer, who prepped at Port Huron Northern High School, played in and started all 27 games during the 2004-05 season for LSSU. Joel averaged 12.7 points and hit a GLIAC-best 50.3 percent (77-153) from the three-point line. Joel's 50.3 percent was also the second-best percentage in the NCAA DII rankings. Whymer's 2.85 made three-pointers per game ranked second in the GLIAC for the 2004-05 campaign and his 12.7 points per game was 16th in the league.
