Allendale, Mich. - The Grand Valley State men's basketball team handed out its postseason awards at its annual Grand Valley State men's basketball banquet held at the Alumni House on the Grand Valley State campus. The Lakers concluded the 2004-05 season with an 18-10 overall mark and qualified for the GLIAC Tournament for the first time since the 2001-02 campaign.
Freshman Callistus Eziukwu continued to reap the rewards of a stellar freshman campaign. Eziukwu, who earned Daktronics Second-Team All-Region and NABC All-District plaudits, was named Grand Valley State's MVP. In addition, Eziukwu was named Co-Defensive Player of the Year and the Offensive Player of the Year. Junior Jerry Wallace was also named Co-Defensive Player of the Year, while redshirt freshman Tommy Fellows was honored with the Derek Smith Award as the most inspirational teammate.
Eziukwu led the team scoring (13.7), rebounding (8.1), blocked shots (114) and shooting percentage (73.7). Callistus set the GLIAC single-season record for shooting percentage by making .746 percent of his shots from the floor. In addition, his 69 blocked shots in GLIAC action is a single-season league record, while his 114 blocked shots overall ranks T-14th all-time for a single-season in NCAA DII history and is third on the career list at GVSU. Callistus tied current Detroit Pistons center Ben Wallace's (Virginia Union) 114 blocks shots in 1995. Eziukwu was named the GLIAC Freshman of the Year and First-Team All-GLIAC North.
Jerry Wallace played in all 28 games for the Lakers and tallied a career-high 18 points versus Grace Bible college. The Muskegon junior averaged 3.2 points and 1.4 rebounds per game. Fellows played in five games for the Lakers and tallied nine points and three assists versus Grace Bible.
