GVSU Faces Saginaw Valley State in Regular Season Road Finale

ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Grand Valley State basketball teams travel to Saginaw Valley State on Thursday night (Feb. 21) for their final regular season road doubleheader. GVSU’s men match up with the Cardinals at 6 p.m., with the Laker women and SVSU to conclude the twinbill at 8 p.m.

In game one, the Laker men look for a season sweep over Saginaw Valley State, as GVSU earned a 78-62 win over the Cardinals on Jan. 24 in Allendale. More recently, Grand Valley State dropped a 60-52 contest at Northwood last Saturday (Feb. 16). The Lakers are 16-7 overall and 13-6 in GLIAC play, which puts them in a tie for second place in the league’s North Division and a three-way tie for third place in the overall standings. Saginaw Valley State is 11-11 overall and 9-10 in conference play, tied for the final GLIAC Tournament playoff spot. SVSU is coming off a huge 53-50 home victory over Michigan Tech, just one week after beating Wayne State, 79-74, also at home. The Cardinals, who have won three straight games, are 7-4 in University Center, while GVSU is 5-6 on the road this season.

The Laker women have won four of their last five contests, including a terrific 60-57 comeback victory at Northwood Saturday night. That win, in which GVSU trailed by a dozen points with nine minutes remaining, pushed the team to 17-6 overall and 13-6 in GLIAC action. When the Lakers faced Saginaw Valley State on Jan. 24 in Allendale, GVSU ran away with a 74-48 triumph. In the league standings, Grand Valley State is in third place in the North Division and fifth place overall. Saginaw Valley State is 11-12 on the year and 9-10 in the conference, good for a seventh-place tie in the overall standings. SVSU has lost two out of its last three games after a four-game winning streak. At home, the Cardinals are 7-6 this season, while GVSU is 7-4 in road games.
