Allendale, Mich. - Grand Valley State will host Northwood University on Thursday in the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena to start a big weekend of GLIAC basketball. The Lakers will then host Lake Superior State on Saturday afternoon, before traveling to Ferris State on Monday. Thursday's basketball doubleheader against the Timberwolves also marks the first ever Hawaiian Night presented by Enterprise at the GVSU Fieldhouse. Wear your Hawaiian clothes to have a chance at winning prizes from Campus Beach, Amerihost Inn, Meijer, and more. The women's game begins at 6:00 pm, while the men start at 8:00 pm.
The women's basketball team enters the weekend 18-3 overall and 9-3 in the GLIAC. They rank #14 in the WBCA Top 25 and second in the NCAA Great Lakes Regional poll. GVSU defeated Northwood in Midland earlier in the year 68-58 behind a 20-point effort from Jennifer Nielsen. The Laker men's squad is 9-11 on the season and 4-8 in conference action. GVSU lost a tight one to the Timberwolves 88-84 earlier in the year as NU knocked down 15 shots from behind the arc.
Lake Superior State starts the weekend with 18 straight wins between the two teams. The LSSU women have won 12 in a row, including a 70-59 victory over GVSU on Jan. 23. The Lake State Lakers have moved up to fifth in the Great Lakes Regional poll. The LSSU men have won six straight games and have moved into sole possesion of third place in the GLIAC North at 6-7, 1.5 games ahead of GVSU in the standings. LSSU took a 87-73 decision in Sault Ste. Marie a couple weeks earlier. Saturday will also be "Kids Club" Day at Grand Valley. Kids will get in free with many fun activities scheduled including mascot mania, and face painting. Free toys, cookies, and other great prizes will be presented by Family Fare/Prevos/Great Day. The women's game starts at 1:00 pm with the men's game following at 3:00 pm.
