Allendale, Mich. - Clear Channel Radio of west Michigan and Grand Valley State University have agreed to an unprecedented change to their broadcasting rights agreement. The change will move Laker football and men's basketball game broadcasts from WMAX 96.1 FM to WMUS 106.9 FM effective with the January 26th men's basketball at Saginaw Valley State University. The game will be simulcast on both stations, with the remaining games being exclusively on WMUS 106.9 FM.
"It is not a typical procedure to move programming from station to station in the middle of a season, but with the great success of the Laker basketball team we wanted to take advantage of the public's interest," said Clear Channel's Vice President of west Michigan Tim Feagan. "The demand to broaden the range of our listeners is there and this change will allow us to include the Lakeshore."
The Grand Valley State men's basketball team is ranked #2 in the country and just established a DI/DII record for the state of Michigan by winning its 20th straight game (20-0) to start a season. GVSU is 76-9 since the 2005-06 campaign with winning streaks of 14, 17 and 20 games.
"We are extremely excited about the change," said Grand Valley State Director of Athletics Tim Selgo. "The move to WMUS will allow us to expand our coverage area and enable our fans to listen to Laker men's basketball and Laker football anywhere in the west Michigan area," added Selgo.
WMUS 106.9 FM has non-directional 50,000 watt signal compared to WMAX 96.1 FM directional 50,000 watt signal. In addition to still covering Gand Rapids and Holland, the WMUS signal will allow Laker broadcasts to penetrate well into Muskegon county.
"This move showcases the strength our partnership and will expand our exposure of GVSU Athletics," said Associate Athletics Director for Marketing Doug Lipinski. "The station change is a statement of our commitment to reach our fans and grow the Laker Nation."
Grand Valley State University has 63,956 alumni, 30,287 of which reside in the tri-county area (Kent-Ottawa-Muskegon).
Grand Valley State Athletics signed a three-year agreement with Clear Channel to broadcast Laker Football and men's basketball on WMAX 96.1 FM in March, 2007. All game broadcasts will move to WMUS while the Chuck Martin Weekly Radio Show and Ric Wesley Coach's Show will remain on WTKG-AM 1230.
