Lakeland, Fla. - Senior forward Mike Hall stepped to the free throw line with 0.7 seconds left on the clock and connected on a free throw to give GVSU a 59-58 win over #10 Montevallo Friday night in Lakeland, Fla., GVSU's opening game of the Florida Southern Holiday Classic. Junior Jason Jamerson led the Lakers with 15 points, including four three-pointers in the win and was joined in double-figures by Dan Redder (10) and Callistus Eziukwu (11). The Lakers will take on host Florida Southern Saturday, December 30 at 8 pm in the Jenkins Fieldhouse in Lakeland, Fla.

The Lakers scored the first two points of the contest as Dan Redder tallied a layup less than a minute in. Montevallo would reclaim the lead and not relinquish it for the next 16 minutes as it mounted leads of as many as seven points. The Lakers would rattle off an 11-5 run to close out the first half and enter the break with a 34-30 lead.

Grand Valley appeared to pull away in the second half as it tallied a 10-point lead less than four minutes to play. Montevallo lived up to its #10 national ranking as the Falcons battled back to tie the score at 57 with 1:26 to play. Junior center Callistus Eziukwu saw his first action of the 2006-07 season after missing the first 10 games of the regular season after suffering an injury and was thrust into a pressure situation as he was awarded two free throws with 1:11 to play. Eziukwu missed the first but knocked down the second to give the Lakers a one point lead. Montevallo's Shon Caston was able to draw a foul on Eziukwu on the next possession and had a chance to give the Falcons the lead. Caston missed the first free throw and was able to connect on the second to tie the game at 58 with 12 seconds to play.

 

 

Senior Kyle Carhart dribbled the ball down the floor and found Hall in the post who went up with a shot and was fouled on the play giving the senior a chance to give GVSU the lead with 0.7 seconds to play. Hall missed the first free throw, but was given a second chance to claim the victory. Hall did not disappoint on his second attempt as he rattled the shot home to give GVSU a 59-58 lead. Montevallo was unable to get a shot off as the horn sounded. The #14 Lakers improve to 9-2 on the season with the win and will face Florida Southern Saturday, Dec. 30 at 8 pm.
