Orlando, Fla. - #3 Grand Valley State defeated Columbus State, 83-71 to open the 2007 Disney's Division II Men's Tip Off Classic basketball tournament on Friday afternoon at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex near Orlando, Fla.
Pete Trammell led the way for the Lakers (1-0) with a career-high 28 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the floor, including making all five attempts from beyond the three-point line. Callistus Eziukwu recorded a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Eziukwu made 9-of-10 shots from the floor and blocked three shots. Jason Jamerson contributed 15 points and nine rebounds. L.J. Kilgore added five assists and four points.
Daniel Quinlan led four Columbus State (0-1) players in double figures with 18 points on 6-of-15 shooting (3-8 3-pt FG). Shondre Guest and Travis Matthews added 13 points apiece. Sean Miller came of the bench to record the double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Grand Valley opened the game with a 10-3 lead in the first three and a half minutes. The Cougars came back to score 11 straight points over the next four minutes to take a four-point lead. Trailing 26-20 with 7:18 left in the half, the Lakers scored 19 of the next 23 points to take a commanding 39-30 lead with two minutes left and cruised into intermission with a seven-point advantage. Columbus State got as close to six points in the second half (50-44), but Grand Valley went on a 19-9 run to extend their lead to 69-53 with about six minutes left in the game. The Lakers shot 52.9 percent from the floor (27-52 FG) compared 34.8 percent (24-69 FG) for the Cougars. Grand Valley controlled the paint with a 43-30 rebound and 32-14 points in the paint advantage.
Grand Valley will next play Stonehill College (Easton, MA) on Saturday at 12:00 p.m., while Columbus State looks to rebound versus Barry University (Miami Shores, FL) at 2:30 p.m.
