Allendale, Mich. - #14 Grand Valley State jumped out to a 14-0 lead to open the contest and never looked back en route to a 67-55 GLIAC home win over Michigan Tech Thursday (Feb. 16) night. GVSU, ranked fourth in the latest NCAA Great Lakes Regional rankings, improves to 21-3 overall and 13-2 in GLIAC action.

Freshman guard Pete Trammell hit a three to open the game and Sophomore Callistus Eziukwu followed with a three-point play. Trammell and sophomore guard Jason Jamerson hit back-to-back three-pointers and senior guard Courtney James hit a jumper from the right wing to give GVSU a 14-0 lead with 15:22 left in the opening half. MTU reached the scoring column at the 14:51 mark when Craig Genung scored in the paint. James gave the Lakers their largest lead of the half (37-18) when he hit his third three of the half.

Michigan Tech made a run at the Lakers early in the second half with a 17-8 run to cut the Laker lead down to eight (45-37), but the GVSU went into low post as Dan Redder scored four points and Eziukwu hit four straight free throws to give GVSU a 53-37 lead. The Lakers' lead reached 20 points (67-47) with a Redder free throw with 1:54 remaining.

Eziukwu led GVSU with 22 points and eight rebounds. James added 15 points, while Trammell chipped in 13. GVSU converted 17-of-23 free throws as a team and outrebounded the Huskies 35-31.

GVSU has held 17-of-24 opponents under 66 points and 12 of 24 under 54 points this season The Lakers are yielding just 57.3 points overall on the year. In addition, GVSU has held 36-of-52 opponents under 67 points during the Ric Wesley era.
 

 

Grand Valley State has won 11 straight games and 16-of-17...The Lakers' 11-game winning streak versus DII opponents is the longest in succession since the 1997-98 campaign when the Lakers won 11 straight versus DII foes...GVSU's last loss to was a 61-52 decision at Michigan Tech (1/5/06).

The Lakers will return to action Saturday (Feb. 18) at Hillsdale College. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m.
