Allendale, Mich. - Grand Valley State dropped a tough 75-74 GLIAC home contest to North foe Northwood University Thursday (Feb. 6) night. GVSU drops to 9-12 overall and 4-9 in league play, while Northwood improves to 8-13 and 4-9.

Grand Valley State and Northwood battled the opening 20 minutes with 10 lead changes and three ties. NU led by as many as eight in the first half before the Lakers Jerry Wallace hit a three-pointer to put GVSU up 37-35 with just 11 seconds left in the opening stanza. However, the Timberwolves Nemanja Kreckovic hit a long three with just three ticks left on the clock to put NU up 38-37 at the half.

The second half was much like the first with 11 more lead changes and five ties. Grand Valley State led 69-64 with 3:54 left in the game, but Northwood went on an 8-0 run over the next 3:14 to take a 74-69 lead. Melvin White hit a pair of free throws to pull the Lakers within three (74-71), but Derek Fillmore connected on one of two free throws to put NU up 75-71. GVSU's Courtney James hit a three with two seconds left to make the final score 75-74.

Senior center Jason Bauer led GVSU with 19 points and seven rebounds. Freshman guard Courtney James added 16 points, seven rebounds and eight assists, while junior Melvin White chipped in 16 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the three-point line. GVSU outrebounded NU 43-37, but connected on just 7-of-13 from the charity stripe. Dallas Logan led Northwood with a game-high 23 points.
 

 

Grand Valley State will host GLIAC North foe Lake Superior State Saturday (Feb. 8) at 3 p.m. Both the men's and women's games will be televised live on WXSP beginning at 1 p.m. with the 14th-ranked Laker women's squad taking on the 25th-ranked LSSU.
