Allendale, Mich. - Grand Valley State dropped a 92-83 decision to Northwood Saturday night before a crowd of 2124 at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena. GVSU falls to 11-8 overall and 3-7 in the GLIAC, while Northwood improves to 11-9 and 5-6.
GVSU jumped out an early 8-0 lead to start the game and led by nine (18-9) with 12:18 left in the first half. However, Northwood went on a 20-11 run over the next seven minutes and tied the game at 29-29 on a Ryan Broker jumper. Northwood went into the lockerroom with a 43-41 lead after Nemanja Kreckovic hit a layup with six ticks left. NU opened the second half with a 13-3 run to build a 56-46 lead at the 15:04 mark. The Timberwolves led by 15 points (74-59) when Derek Fillmore hit a three-pointer at the 9:13 mark. GVSU sliced the lead down to eight (78-70) on a pair of Eric Chess free throws, but NU answered with a layup by Richard Kamm and jumper by Kieth Barr to extend the lead to 12.
Eric Chess led GVSU with a career-high 27 points, while Marcus Wallace chipped in 21. Courtney James was the only other Laker in double figures with 14 points. The Lakers converted 24-of-32 free throws, turned the ball over just nine times, but were just 7-25 from the three-point line. Northwood converted 36-of-62 shots from the floor, 9-of-20 from the three-point line and outrebounded GVSU 42-25.
