Terry Smith enters his seventh season as the Men's Basketball coach at Grand Valley State University. Smith has led the Lakers to an 96-70 record in his six years as head coach. He was appointed to the position on April 30, 1997. A Crystal Falls, Mich., native Smith is just the fourth head coach in the 35-year history of Laker basketball. Smith led Grand Valley to the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and tournament championship in 2001.
Smith, who guided Grand Valley to the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, GLIAC tournament championship, and NCAA DII tournament appearance in 2001, has a career-coaching record of 168-154.
Prior to being named head coach at Grand Valley, Smith was the head coach at Lake Superior State University for six years. At Lake Superior State, he successfully built a strong program, including a GLIAC championship in 1996 and being named GLIAC and Great Lakes Region Coach-of-the-Year.
Prior to the appointment at Lake Superior State, Smith served as an assistant coach at Ferris State under former coach, Tom Ludwig. Smith has held head coaching positions at Cedar Springs High School (1986-87) and Fulton-Middleton High School (1984-86).
A standout athlete at Crystal Falls Forest Park High School, Smith won varsity letters while competing on championship teams in football, basketball, and track.
Smith earned a bachelor's degree in physical education with minors in history and health education from Michigan State University in 1984. He earned his master's degree in physical education from Central Michigan University in 1990.
Smith is a member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) and the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan (BCAM).
